Cameron Green slammed an unbeaten 100 of 47 balls as Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in match number 69 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, May 21. MI needed the win to stay alive in the playoffs race.

Chasing another 200-plus score (target of 201), Mumbai Indians lost Ishan Kishan for 14 off 12 balls to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. However, Green and skipper Rohit Sharma (56 off 37) added 128 for the second wicket to put Mumbai in control of the chase. Rohit looked out of sorts in the first half, but found his rhythm as he spent time at the crease.

Green, on the other hand, was in great touch from the word go. He clobbered eight fours and an equal number of sixes to lift Mumbai Indians to an impressive win in exactly 18 overs. The partnership was broken when Rohit fell to a brilliant catch by Nitish Reddy off Mayank Dagar’s bowling.

Suryakumar Yadav (25 not out off 16) then came in and had some fun, hitting four impressive boundaries. Deservedly, it was Green who hit the winning run and also brought up his maiden T20 century by working Bhuvneshwar for a single to the right of mid-on.

Earlier, SRH posted an impressive 200/5 in their 20 overs after being sent into bat. Vivrant Sharma (69 off 47) and Mayank Agarwal (83 off 46) added 140 for the opening wicket in 13.5 overs. Vivrant struck nine fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Akash Madhwal. Agarwal, who hit eight fours and four maximums, was looking good for a hundred when he too perished to Madhwal.

Mumbai fought back well after the dismissals of SRH’s openers as Glenn Phillips (1) was sent back by Chris Jordan, while Heinrich Klaasen (18) and Harry Brook (0) were bowled by Madhwal off consecutive deliveries. It needed a last-ball six from Aiden Markram (13 not out off 7) to push SRH to 200.

Speaking after the win, Player of the Match Cameron Green said, “It was a great partnership with Rohit. He's so experienced in IPL. Having his leadership at the other end really helped. The whole MI set-up has been awesome, getting really well looked after. The intent at the top, it helps when you have guys like Ishan and Rohit in front of you and SKY after you.”

He added, “We've got Polly (Pollard) as well to help me. That's a pretty good set-up. When we had about 20 to get, I said SKY to finish it. Then we had a couple of runs left, we just trickled over the line.”
