Mumbai Indians are one of the stronger sides in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and are always expected to do well although they haven’t always lived up to expectations. They have been among the franchises who have featured in each and every edition of the tournament since its inception. They have come into their own in the last few editions, and would be looking forward to more impressive efforts. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the team while Ricky Ponting is the coach. Mukesh and Nita Ambani are the owners, Robin Singh is the assistant and batting coach, Shane Bond is the bowling coach while Jonty Rhodes is the fielding coach. Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble are mentors of the franchise.

In spite of possessing super star players, Mumbai have won the IPL only once, in 2013. In the final that year, they met Chennai Super Kings and beat them by a convincing margin of 23 runs. Kieron Pollard starred with 60 not out from 32 balls. In 2010, they finished as runners up. They met Chennai in the final, but went down by 22 runs. In 2011, 2012 and the 2014 edition, they again came close to winning the tournament, but could not progress past the playoffs. In 2008 and 2009, they were eliminated in the group stage.

Key players to watch out for

Rohit Sharma: The Mumbai Indians skipper may have had a mixed time in the World Cup, but he is a completely different player when it comes to the IPL. Rohit has played some fantastic knocks for Mumbai in the IPL, and is undoubtedly among their star performers. He can hit the ball a long way, and when in form he is unstoppable. Sharma has also been effective with his off spin in the IPL, claiming hat-tricks.

Kieron Pollard: West Indies cricket may not need him, but he is very much in demand when it comes to the IPL. He was the key contributor when Mumbai won the title a couple of years back. Pollard’s ability to hit the big strokes is what makes him extremely dangerous. He can roll his arm over, and is a brilliant fielder in the outfield.

Corey Anderson: Another all-rounder who can be of great use to Mumbai Indians. Like Pollard, Anderson can also hit the ball a long away. Just a year ago, he held the record for the fastest ODI ton. He is also a decent medium pacer so Mumbai can utilise him well.

Lasith Malinga: He may not have fired for Sri Lanka in the World Cup, but he will be Mumbai’s key performer in the IPL again. If Malinga can get his yorkers right, he can be unstoppable yet again. Mumbai will be hoping for Malinga to be at his best.

Harbhajan Singh: The offie’s India days may be over, but Singh remains at threat in the IPL. He has played a key role in Mumbai’s success over the years. Singh has the ability to keep things tight, and can also claim wickets at key moments.
